Anthropic secures $5B from Amazon, commits $100B to cloud spending
Anthropic receives $5 billion from Amazon and commits to $100 billion in cloud spending, strengthening its partnership with AWS and advancing AI development.
Anthropic announced on Monday that Amazon has agreed to invest an additional $5 billion in the AI company, increasing Amazon's total investment in Anthropic to $13 billion. In parallel, Anthropic has committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next 10 years, securing access to up to 5 gigawatts of new computing capacity to support training and deployment of its Claude models.
The structure of the agreement highlights a growing trend in AI financing, where major investments are increasingly tied to cloud infrastructure commitments rather than direct cash funding alone. A similar arrangement was seen recently when Amazon participated in a large-scale funding deal involving OpenAI.
At the centre of the partnership is Amazon's custom silicon strategy. The deal heavily involves its in-house chips, including Graviton, a low-power CPU line, and Trainium, an AI accelerator designed to compete with Nvidia hardware. The agreement specifically covers access to Trainium2 through Trainium4 chips, although Trainium4 is not yet available. Amazon released Trainium3 in December, marking the latest generation of its AI-focused hardware.
Anthropic will also have the option to expand its capacity usage as future generations of Amazon chips are released, giving the company long-term flexibility to scale its compute infrastructure alongside its model development needs.
The expanded partnership comes at a time of intense competition in the AI infrastructure space, where access to large-scale compute is becoming a key strategic advantage. Anthropic continues to scale its Claude AI systems while competing with other frontier model developers for both funding and compute resources.
Industry speculation is also growing that Anthropic could be preparing for another major funding round. Reports suggest that venture capital firms have been discussing valuations for the company exceeding $800 billion, although no new round has been formally announced.
The latest deal strengthens the partnership between Anthropic and Amazon, with AWS serving as a core infrastructure partner for one of the industry's most prominent AI model developers.
