Few situations are more frustrating than dining out with a large group of friends, skipping drinks to keep costs down, and then being asked to contribute equally when the bill arrives. Nobody wants to seem overly concerned about the cost or hold up the group by manually recalculating who owes what. At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced a new feature designed to eliminate that hassle.

With the new capability, users can point their iPhone camera at a restaurant receipt. Using Siri-powered intelligence within the Camera app, each item on the bill becomes selectable, allowing users to assign purchases to the people who ordered them. The feature can then generate separate Apple Cash payment requests based on each person’s actual order. Apple hopes the tool will make the process of dividing expenses quicker, simpler, and far less uncomfortable.

“If you’re grabbing a bite with friends and point your iPhone at the bill, then [you can] select what you ordered to split the tab with Apple Cash,” said Apple Vice President of Software Sebastien Marineau-Mes during the company’s presentation.

Bill-splitting functionality is not entirely new. Applications such as SplitWise and Tab have offered similar tools for years. However, despite their usefulness, these services never became a routine part of most people’s dining experiences. At least anecdotally, many groups still rely on manual calculations rather than dedicated expense-sharing apps. Because Apple’s payment tools are integrated directly into native services like iMessage, requesting payment through Apple Cash may feel more natural and convenient than asking friends to download and use a separate application.

Apple also highlighted another way Siri Camera Intelligence can be useful while dining out. Instead of scanning a receipt after the meal, users can point their iPhone camera at their food to view estimated nutritional information about what they are eating.

The addition further expands Apple’s efforts to blend visual intelligence and everyday tasks into the iPhone experience, making common activities such as managing expenses and understanding food choices more accessible through the device’s built-in features.
