Digital payments platform Cash App is introducing an unusual new gadget designed to bring a playful twist to contactless payments. On Thursday, the company announced the launch of a tap-to-pay wand, a device inspired by a popular social media trend in which people use handmade magic wands embedded with contactless payment cards to make in-person purchases.

With the trend gaining attention online, Cash App has decided to offer an official version that users can purchase and use themselves. The new device, priced at $25, marks the first product in the company’s upcoming lineup of NFC-powered payment tags. Cash App says the collection will expand over the coming months with additional designs and form factors.

According to the company, the payment tags are directly linked to the Cash App Card and can be used anywhere that supports Visa’s tap-to-pay network. Users activate the hardware by linking the wand to their Cash App account, and the company notes that there is no minimum balance requirement for the tag to function.

The wand itself includes a keychain attachment, making it easy to connect to bags, backpacks, keys, or even clothing accessories. While the device offers a practical benefit by allowing users to make purchases without needing to retrieve their phone, Cash App is also embracing the novelty factor behind the product.

The company suggests the wand could be especially useful in situations where accessing a smartphone is inconvenient, such as at concerts, sporting events, festivals, or other crowded gatherings. At the same time, the whimsical nature of paying with a wand is clearly part of the appeal, particularly for younger users who enjoy playful technology and social media-driven experiences.

Using the wand is designed to feel just like making any other contactless payment. Once linked to a Cash App Card, users can tap the device at compatible payment terminals and complete purchases instantly.

Cash App says users will receive immediate spending notifications whenever a transaction is completed. The company has also included security features that allow users to lock or unlock the payment tag directly through the app. If the wand is lost or misplaced, it can be deactivated through Cash App to prevent unauthorised use.

The company added that it actively monitors transactions conducted through its payment tags and applies fraud protection measures to help safeguard users and their accounts.

Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block, Cash App’s parent company, described the launch as part of a broader effort to rethink how people interact with payments.

“While digital wallets are invisible and physical cards are often buried in wallets, Cash App Tags are just the opposite,” Templeton said in a statement. “We see a unique opportunity here to make payments visible and social for the first time.”

The wand is only the beginning of the company’s plans for the new hardware category. Cash App says it plans to release additional tag designs in the coming months, including limited-edition versions available through special product drops. Some models are expected to become permanent additions to the lineup later this summer.

The launch also reflects Cash App’s continued focus on attracting younger users, particularly members of Generation Z. The company has spent several years expanding its financial products to appeal to younger demographics and build long-term relationships with future customers.

In 2021, Cash App introduced account options specifically designed for teenagers, allowing younger users to access digital financial tools under parental supervision. More recently, the company launched a parent-managed debit card for children ages 6 to 12, further extending its reach into younger age groups.

The introduction of the payment wand aligns with that strategy by combining digital payments with a product that feels social, expressive, and shareable. Rather than positioning payments as an invisible background activity, Cash App appears to be experimenting with ways to make everyday transactions more interactive and visible.

As the company expands its NFC-powered hardware lineup, the payment wand serves as both a functional payment tool and a reflection of how financial technology companies are increasingly blending utility, design, and social trends to engage the next generation of users.
