ChatGPT Brings Unlimited Text Chats to Free Users With GPT-5.6 Luna
OpenAI is bringing unlimited text chats to ChatGPT Free and Go users, powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, while Plus and Pro users get upgraded reasoning controls.
OpenAI is removing limits on text-based conversations for ChatGPT users, giving Free and Go users unlimited text chats as the company expands access to its latest AI models.
The change comes as ChatGPT recently surpassed 1 billion weekly users. Free and Go users will now have GPT-5.6 Luna as the default model, replacing GPT-5.5.
Users will also get a new “Think” button that lets them choose higher reasoning power when dealing with more complicated questions. Separate limits will continue to apply to features such as file uploads, image generation, voice and image-based interactions.
New controls for Plus and Pro users
OpenAI is also upgrading the ChatGPT experience for Plus and Pro subscribers with a new version of GPT-5.6 Sol. The model is designed for quick tasks such as answering questions, web research, writing, planning, advice and decision-making, with OpenAI saying it produces more compact and robust responses.
Plus and Pro users will also receive a thinking slider that allows them to control how much reasoning the model uses. The setting can be adjusted depending on the complexity of a question and the number of steps needed to solve it.
OpenAI said internal testing found that factual errors were 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared with GPT-5.5-Instant.
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus and Pro users now, while the remaining changes for Free and Go users are rolling out this week. Unlimited text chats and the new Think button are expected to become available next week.
