Google Launches $899 Googlebook Laptop With Gemini AI Features

Google has opened pre-orders for its new $899 Googlebook laptop, a device designed around Gemini AI features and positioned as a step beyond traditional Chromebooks. The company says the new laptops combine Android OS, a desktop version of Chrome, and familiar Chrome features with new AI-powered tools.

The Googlebook lineup is built around Gemini capabilities that are integrated directly into the laptop experience. Features include an AI-powered cursor, AI-enhanced dictation through a tool called Rambler, and AI-assisted widgets.

Gemini Becomes Part of the Desktop Experience

Google is using the Googlebook cursor to connect directly to Gemini. Users can highlight webpage content, ask Gemini to review selected information, check whether an email appears suspicious, or work with images by selecting them and requesting AI assistance.

Some of these features resemble existing AI tools on smartphones, including Google’s Circle to Search. While useful, the AI cursor and other additions may not be enough on their own to convince many users to replace an existing laptop.

The company’s Rambler dictation feature could be one of the more practical additions, helping turn unstructured voice notes into clearer text. Other features, including Gemini Live and AI-generated widgets, are also available without requiring dedicated new hardware.

A Possible Chromebook Transition

Beyond consumer use, Google appears to be positioning Googlebook as part of a longer-term strategy for education markets. The company has previously said around 50 million Chromebooks are used by students and educators worldwide, and many existing devices may eventually transition to the new Googlebook experience.

Each Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, offering Gemini Advanced tools, 5TB of cloud storage, and additional services such as YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop trials. Google says the devices will receive updates for up to 10 years.

The laptops will be available through the Google Store, Best Buy, and other retailers. Sales begin Oct. 4 in the U.S. and Oct. 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.

Flagship Googlebook models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo feature options such as OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards, Intel and Qualcomm processors with dedicated NPUs, and up to 14 hours of battery life, according to Google’s first look announcement.
