Elon Musk’s Boring Company Seeks $20 Billion Valuation in New Funding Round

Elon Musk’s tunnelling startup, The Boring Company, is reportedly in discussions to raise $4 billion in a new funding round that would value the business at approximately $20 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The report said the financing has not been finalised and the terms remain subject to change. If completed at the proposed valuation, it would represent a sharp increase from the company’s $5.7 billion valuation achieved during its last major fundraising round in 2022.

The Boring Company develops underground transportation systems designed to reduce urban traffic congestion. Its most established project is the Las Vegas Loop, where passengers travel between stations in Tesla vehicles using a combination of underground tunnels and surface roads.

Expansion plans continue

Beyond Las Vegas, the company has announced plans to develop tunnel networks beneath Nashville and Dubai. According to The Wall Street Journal, it has also proposed similar transportation projects in Baltimore, Chicago and Los Angeles as it looks to expand its underground transit system.

Regulatory challenges remain

Despite its growth ambitions, The Boring Company has faced scrutiny over workplace safety and environmental compliance. Tunnel workers have suffered serious injuries during construction, while Nevada regulators said last year the company violated environmental regulations nearly 800 times.

The Boring Company was spun out of SpaceX in 2018 as a separate venture focused on tunnelling technology and transportation infrastructure. The fundraising discussions also come shortly after SpaceX completed the largest initial public offering in history, though the aerospacecompany’ss share price has fallen significantly since its market debut.
