Elon Musk’s Boring Company suspends work on Vegas airport tunnel after ‘crushing injury’
Elon Musk’s Boring Company halted work on its Vegas airport tunnel after a worker’s “crushing injury.” OSHA is investigating; worker reported stable.
Elon Musk’s Boring Company has halted construction on a tunnel leading to the Las Vegas airport following a serious workplace accident in which a worker suffered a “crushing injury” late Wednesday night, according to a report from Fortune. Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has since launched an investigation.
The Clark County Fire Department confirmed it received an emergency call at 10:12 p.m. local time Wednesday and dispatched an 18-person rescue crew to the site. Details about the accident remain unclear, but the injured worker was lifted out of the tunnel by firefighters using an on-site crane. The individual was later reported to be in stable condition.
The Boring Company has spent the past several years constructing tunnels in Las Vegas, including a system that links the Las Vegas Convention Center with nearby hotel casinos. The underground transit loop has delivered more than 3 million rides across its 3.5 miles of tunnels currently in operation.
The company has ambitious plans to expand the network to cover much of Las Vegas, including a direct link to the airport. However, reports indicate that dozens of workers have been injured during tunnel construction. Even the project’s former safety manager has gone public with warnings about the risks workers face at these sites.
