Zoox Gains Freedom to Expand Las Vegas Robotaxi Fleet as Nevada Limit Ends
Amazon-owned Zoox can expand its Nevada robotaxi fleet after a 100-vehicle limit expires, increasing competition in Las Vegas.
Amazon-owned Zoox will gain more flexibility to expand its robotaxi operations in Nevada after a regulatory limit restricting the company to 100 vehicles expires later this month.
The Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) permit that capped Zoox’s fleet is scheduled to expire on September 25. The updated NTA permit outlines the regulatory change that removes the previous vehicle limit.
Zoox Prepares for Larger Las Vegas Fleet
The expiration does not automatically mean hundreds of new Zoox robotaxis will immediately appear on Las Vegas streets. However, it gives the company greater flexibility to increase its fleet as competition in autonomous ride-hailing grows.
Zoox currently operates around 100 custom-built robotaxis across several U.S. cities, including Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami. The company’s vehicles are designed without traditional controls such as steering wheels and pedals, allowing passengers to ride in a purpose-built autonomous vehicle.
Las Vegas remains Zoox’s only market where the company currently charges passengers for robotaxi rides. The company began paid service after receiving a temporary federal exemption related to vehicle safety requirements.
Competition Grows in Nevada Robotaxi Market
Zoox will face increasing competition as other companies expand autonomous transportation services in the region. Nevada regulators have approved permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services in Clark County.
Waymo has already started offering robotaxi rides in Las Vegas, beginning with a limited fleet of autonomous vehicles covering selected areas of the city.
Zoox has not confirmed how quickly it plans to expand its Las Vegas fleet. Still, the company said it expects to gradually increase vehicle numbers over the coming months to meet demand in Las Vegas and other markets.
