U.S. Automakers Could Be Required to Include AM Radio in New Vehicles
A bipartisan bill could require U.S. automakers to include free AM radio as standard equipment in new vehicles.
A bipartisan effort in Congress could require US automakers to include AM radio as standard equipment in new vehicles. The House of Representatives has approved the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, which would direct federal regulators to require free AM radio access in new passenger vehicles.
The legislation now moves to the Senate after receiving broad House support. Supporters argue that AM radio remains an important communication tool during emergencies because its signals can travel long distances and provide information when other communication systems may be unavailable.
Automakers moving away from traditional AM radio
The push for the requirement comes as several automakers have removed AM radio from some newer vehicles, particularly electric vehicles. Companies including BMW, Rivian, Tesla, and Volvo have moved toward software-based entertainment systems that rely on streaming services instead of traditional radio hardware.
Electric vehicle manufacturers have cited electromagnetic interference from electric motors as a challenge for AM radio reception, which can affect audio quality. Some automakers have argued that digital alternatives provide a better experience for modern vehicles.
Tesla does not include AM receivers in base versions of some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. In contrast, Rivian’s R2 SUV does not include built-in AM or FM receivers but offers digital radio access through iHeartRadio. Ford previously removed AM radio from some vehicles but later reversed that decision.
Senate consideration ahead
Senators Ed Markey and Ted Cruz introduced the Senate version of the bill and secured 60 co-sponsors earlier this year, a threshold that could help the legislation move past a filibuster.
If the Senate approves it and the President signs it into law, the measure would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to establish rules requiring AM radio in new cars, trucks, and SUVs without charging consumers extra.
