FBI Probes Cyberattack Targeting Its Wiretap and Surveillance Systems

Hackers have reportedly gained access to FBI networks.

On Thursday, CNN, citing an anonymous source, reported that the intrusion affected a system used to handle wiretaps and warrants tied to foreign intelligence surveillance.

"The FBI identified and addressed suspicious activities on FBI networks, and we have leveraged all technical capabilities to respond," a bureau spokesperson said, while declining to share additional details.

The incident marks the latest in a string of major breaches involving U.S. government agencies and American companies in recent years. Last year, Chinese hackers infiltrated the U.S. Treasury and the National Nuclear Security Administration, the agency responsible for overseeing the safety and security of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. Around the same time, Russian hackers stole sealed records from the U.S. Courts' filing system. Separately, Elon Musk's DOGE took control of Americans' personal data, disregarding long-established security practices and violating federal protocols, despite a senator's warning that Musk posed national security risks.

At the same time, the Chinese state-linked hacking group Salt Typhoon has broken into at least 200 U.S. companies, according to the FBI. Among the companies known to have been compromised are telecom providers AT&T and Verizon, as well as Lumen, Charter Communications, and Windstream.
