Flock Safety Offers Employee Buyouts Amid Surveillance Technology Backlash

Flock Safety is offering voluntary employee buyouts as the surveillance technology company faces continued criticism over privacy concerns and the use of its license plate recognition systems.

According to Wired, Flock announced a severance package for employees who choose to leave voluntarily. The company reportedly expects significant interest from its roughly 1,500-person workforce and plans to approve buyouts for most interested employees.

The buyout program comes as Flock faces scrutiny over its camera technology, which law enforcement agencies use to collect vehicle information. Critics have raised concerns about privacy and possible misuse of the systems.

A Washington Post report identified cases involving alleged misuse of Flock technology by police officers, while reports from Ars Technica highlighted cities ending contracts with the company.

Flock CEO Garrett Langley said on the All-In podcast that the backlash has most affected employee morale.

The company has not disclosed how many employees are expected to leave through the voluntary buyout program.
