Google Maps introduces AI-powered captions for user photos

Google is introducing a set of new features to make it easier for users to contribute local insights on Google Maps, the company announced on Tuesday. One of the key updates is the ability for its AI model, Gemini, to automatically generate captions when users upload photos or videos about a location.

When users select images they want to share, Gemini analyses the content and creates suggested captions. Users still have full control, with the option to edit or remove the generated text before posting. Google says the feature is designed to simplify the process and help users get started more quickly when adding content. At present, caption suggestions are available in English on iOS devices in the United States, with plans to expand to Android and other regions in the coming months.

The company is also improving how users find relevant images to share. By enabling media access for Google Maps in their device settings, users can view photos and videos from their recent activity directly in the “Contribute” tab. From there, they can quickly select and upload content without having to search manually.

Google explained in a blog post that photos and videos uploaded by users help others better understand a place, including its atmosphere or recent updates such as menu changes. With this update, the company aims to make the process of choosing and sharing those visuals more seamless. The photo and video recommendation feature is now available worldwide on both iOS and Android devices.

Another update focuses on helping contributors track their activity more easily. Users will now see their total points displayed within the “Contribute” tab, along with clearer visibility of their “Local Guide” level on their profile pages. Local Guides earn points by adding photos, writing reviews, answering questions, and verifying information to improve the platform.

Google has also refreshed its achievement badges, making it easier to identify contributors based on their activity, such as “expert fact-finder,” “master photographer,” or “rising novice.” Additionally, high-level contributors will now stand out with updated gold-colored profile highlights.

According to Google, these changes are designed to support its community of more than 500 million contributors who regularly share photos, videos, and reviews to help others decide where to visit. Since Google Maps depends heavily on user contributions to keep information accurate and up to date, simplifying and enhancing the contribution process remains a key focus for the company.
