Grab to acquire Foodpanda Taiwan from Delivery Hero for $600 million
Grab plans to acquire Foodpanda Taiwan from Delivery Hero for $600 million, strengthening its position in Asia’s competitive food delivery market.
Ride-hailing and delivery company Grab announced on Monday that it plans to acquire Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda business in Taiwan for $600 million in cash, marking the company’s first move beyond its core Southeast Asian markets.
The deal remains subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalised in the second half of 2026. Grab said it intends to fully migrate users, merchants, and driver-partners to its platform by early 2027.
This development comes about a year after Uber Technologies dropped its own attempt to acquire Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations in March 2025. That proposed deal was blocked by Taiwan’s antitrust regulator, which raised concerns about market concentration.
At the time, Uber Eats and Foodpanda dominated Taiwan’s food delivery sector. Reports indicated that Foodpanda held approximately 52% market share, while Uber Eats accounted for 48% between 2022 and 2023. Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission warned that a merger between the two would have resulted in a combined market share of around 90%, potentially limiting competition and driving up prices.
The current transaction may be viewed differently by regulators. If Grab completes the acquisition, it would gain a market share slightly above 50%, positioning it as a strong competitor to Uber Eats rather than creating a near-monopoly.
“This is a natural next step for Grab, as our experience in Southeast Asia is a direct fit for this market. Our longstanding expertise in managing complex delivery logistics for dense and high-traffic cities is well-suited for Taiwan’s bustling cities,” said Anthony Tan, Group CEO and co-founder of Grab.
He added that Taiwan’s population of roughly 23 million demonstrates strong demand for mobile-first services, similar to consumer behaviour across Southeast Asia. “We see a significant opportunity to grow the food and groceries delivery scene here,” Tan said.
Following the acquisition, Grab plans to expand its operations across 21 cities in Taiwan, strengthening its presence in the region. The company aims to combine its AI-driven platform and operational expertise with Foodpanda’s established local network.
Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations generated approximately $1.8 billion in Gross Merchandise Value, according to the company.
