Brad Lightcap Leaves OpenAI to Start a New Venture

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI’s longest-serving executives, is leaving the artificial intelligence company after eight years to pursue a new venture.

Lightcap announced his departure in an internal message shared publicly Tuesday, telling employees it was “bittersweet” to be moving on from OpenAI to “start something new.” He did not disclose details about what he plans to build next.

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and became closely involved in building the company’s business and operational infrastructure. He spent four years as chief financial officer before becoming chief operating officer in 2022.

Earlier this year, an executive restructuring moved Lightcap from the COO position into a role overseeing special projects. Before joining OpenAI, he worked with CEO Sam Altman at startup accelerator Y Combinator.

Lightcap said his responsibilities at OpenAI included helping establish early versions of teams spanning finance, legal, people, corporate security, go-to-market operations, government relations and partnerships.

“Among the most rewarding parts of this journey for me has been watching each of these teams mature under brilliant leaders,” Lightcap wrote.

Lightcap offered few details about his next move but indicated that he had spent recent months thinking about challenges emerging as artificial intelligence enters its next stage of development.

He said there are “a few important new things” that will need to be addressed and promised to share more about his plans soon. Lightcap also said he continues to believe in OpenAI’s mission and expects to support it from a different position.

OpenAI leadership continues to change

Lightcap’s departure comes during a period of executive turnover at OpenAI as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering.

Fidji Simo, one of OpenAI’s most senior executives and the leader of its AGI development efforts, announced in July that she would step down. Other recent departures include Bill Peebles, who previously led the company’s Sora video-generation operation, and Kevin Weil, who served as vice president of OpenAI’s science organisation.

Lightcap has not provided a timetable for announcing his next project. His departure removes another longtime executive who helped build OpenAI’s operations as the company grew from a research-focused organisation into one of the world’s most prominent AI businesses.
