India now produces one in four iPhones for Apple: Report
A report says Apple now manufactures roughly 25% of its iPhones in India as the company accelerates supply chain diversification beyond China.
Apple is now producing 25% of its iPhones in India, reaching a milestone JPMorgan forecast in 2022, according to a Bloomberg report. The shift marks a significant step in Apple’s longer-term effort to reduce its dependence on China for manufacturing.
Bloomberg reported that India produced 55 million iPhones last year out of the roughly 220 million to 230 million units manufactured globally. Apple has also moved quickly to strengthen that commitment. Ahead of the iPhone 17 lineup’s launch last September, the company began producing the full range in India, and Apple CEO Tim Cook said that most iPhones sold in the U.S. are now supplied from India.
That transition accelerated in 2025 as Apple navigated uncertainty in China stemming from constantly shifting U.S. tariff policies, prompting the company to spread production more widely across countries. The issue had become significant enough that President Donald Trump personally warned Cook against further expansion in India during a business summit in Doha in May.
India is also becoming a more important consumer market for Apple. According to analyst firm Counterpoint, the company shipped 14 million units in India last year, up 9% from a year earlier. Bloomberg separately reported that iPhone sales in the country topped $9 billion last year. Apple is also reportedly in discussions to roll out Apple Pay in India this year, and it opened its sixth retail store in the country last month.
