Listen Labs Scraps $125M Series C Amid Reported Salesforce Acquisition Talks
Listen Labs reportedly walked away from a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation while Salesforce held acquisition talks valued at about $2 billion.
Listen Labs, an AI startup that automates customer research through voice interviews, recently signed a term sheet for a $125 million Series C at a $1.5 billion valuation but ultimately walked away from the financing.
Menlo Ventures had been expected to lead the round, according to people familiar with the matter. Abandoning a signed term sheet is unusual in venture capital, where investors generally expect companies to proceed once preliminary financing terms have been agreed.
The funding round appears to have been overtaken by potential acquisition discussions. Salesforce has reportedly held talks to acquire Listen Labs for roughly $2 billion, though the discussions have not been finalised and may not result in a transaction.
Listen Labs has grown quickly in AI-powered market research
Founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann and Alfred Wahlforss, Listen Labs uses AI to develop survey questions and conduct customer interviews over audio or video. The resulting conversations are converted into reports and presentations similar to work traditionally produced by human market researchers.
The startup has about $30 million in annualised revenue, according to people familiar with its financials. Its customers include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic and Sweetgreen.
Listen Labs was valued at $500 million when it announced a $69 million Series B in January led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from Sequoia, Conviction and Pear VC. The proposed $1.5 billion Series C would therefore have tripled its valuation within months.
Another AI research startup, Simile, raised a $200 million Series B at a $2 billion valuation in July, led by Greenoaks. That financing helped establish a higher valuation benchmark in the emerging market for AI-powered customer research.
Salesforce talks could reshape the next funding step
If the Salesforce discussions do not produce an acquisition, venture investors expect Listen Labs could return to the fundraising market seeking a valuation of $2 billion or more, according to the source.
An acquisition could add Listen Labs’ customer-research technology to Salesforce’s broader AI business. One person with experience negotiating exits to Salesforce, however, said a transaction near $2 billion would represent roughly 67 times Listen Labs’ annualised revenue, potentially making the valuation difficult to justify.
The market is becoming increasingly crowded. Alongside Listen Labs and Simile, companies including Outset, Keplar and Aaru are applying AI to customer research. Some automate interviews with real people, while others use synthetic respondents and AI models to simulate human behaviour and predict how consumers may respond.
Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures and Simile did not immediately respond to requests for comment cited in the source article. For now, the abandoned Series C leaves Listen Labs between two possible paths: a significantly larger financing round or a potential sale to one of the world’s largest enterprise software companies.
