Meta reportedly delays mixed reality glasses until 2027
Meta has delayed its Phoenix mixed reality glasses from 2026 to early 2027 as it focuses on product quality and sustainability amid significant metaverse budget cuts.
Meta is developing new mixed reality glasses under the codename Phoenix, according to Business Insider — but the expected launch timeline has shifted from the second half of 2026 to the first half of 2027.
The Facebook parent company already offers VR headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses, but this upcoming device appears to be something different. The glasses are reportedly designed in a form factor similar to the Apple Vision Pro and will use a puck-style external power source.
Business Insider reports that internal memos from Meta executives confirm the delay. These updates were shared after meetings in which CEO Mark Zuckerberg instructed teams to take additional time to ensure the business model is sustainable and that the final product delivers higher-quality experiences.
Meta’s metaverse division leaders, Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns, reportedly stated that the updated timeline “is going to give us a lot more breathing room to get the details right.”
Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Meta is preparing to reduce its metaverse budget by as much as 30%.
