NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says the AI boom is generating millions of new job opportunities

When it comes to concerns about AI potentially displacing workers, Jensen Huang believes there is little reason for alarm. Speaking during a conversation Monday night with Becky Quick on MSNBC, hosted by the Milken Institute, the NVIDIA chief executive described AI as a large-scale creator of jobs rather than a force that would lead to widespread unemployment, a concern often raised by critics.

The discussion covered a range of topics, but a recurring theme was the growing economic anxiety tied to the rapid expansion of AI and the question of whether it poses a genuine risk to workers in the United States. At one point, Quick remarked on the pace of change, asking whether it could lead to greater economic disruption and inequality, and what steps might be needed to address those concerns.

Throughout the conversation, Huang maintained a consistently optimistic outlook. “AI creates jobs,” he said, emphasising that AI represents the country’s strongest opportunity to reindustrialise. He pointed out that the industry depends on a new class of industrial facilities that manufacture the hardware forming the backbone of AI systems. These facilities, along with the broader AI ecosystem, require a significant workforce to operate and grow.

Huang also argued that automating specific tasks does not necessarily eliminate entire roles. He suggested that people who believe otherwise are misunderstanding the relationship between a job’s purpose and the individual tasks within it. From his perspective, even if AI handles certain responsibilities, the overall role a worker plays within an organisation is likely to persist.

He also pushed back against claims that AI could dominate humanity or cause widespread economic collapse. Huang expressed concern that such narratives could discourage people from engaging with the technology. He warned that fear-driven perceptions might make AI unpopular in the United States and prevent individuals from taking advantage of its benefits.

At the same time, some of the more alarming rhetoric surrounding AI has originated within the tech industry itself. Critics argue that exaggerated claims about AI’s capabilities have sometimes been used to generate attention and excitement, even when the technology has not yet reached those levels.

The long-term economic impact of AI remains uncertain. However, several respected financial and academic institutions have suggested that up to 15% of jobs in the United States could be displaced over the coming years as AI adoption continues to expand.
