Google Maps Adds AI Features for Food Orders and Hotel Bookings

Google has expanded the capabilities of its AI-powered Ask Maps feature, introducing new agentic tools that allow users to order food, book hotels, purchase event tickets and receive personalised travel assistance directly within Google Maps.

The latest update reflects Google’s broader strategy of transforming Maps from a navigation application into an AI assistant capable of helping users complete everyday real-world tasks. The new features are rolling out to users in the United States, while some additional capabilities are expanding to all markets where Ask Maps is available.

AI can order food and plan trips

With the new food-ordering feature, users can ask Ask Maps questions such as where to find a nearby restaurant serving specific dishes. The AI will recommend matching restaurants, and after a selection is made, users can tap the “Order online” option to place an order through supported services including Square, Toast and Uber Eats. Ask Maps will automatically add selected items to a shopping cart before directing users to complete payment on the partner platform.

Google is also extending Ask Maps to hotel searches. Users can describe the type of accommodation they want using natural language, including preferences for price, location or nearby amenities. The AI compares prices, checks availability and presents suitable options, with bookings completed through partner websites.

The assistant can also recommend nearby entertainment by answering questions about comedy shows, concerts and other local events, while providing links to purchase tickets.

Personal Intelligence comes to Ask Maps

Google is bringing its Personal Intelligence technology to Ask Maps, allowing the assistant to tailor responses using information stored in a user’s Gmail account and Google Calendar. Users can ask questions about upcoming flights, hotel reservations or travel plans, and the AI will use available information to generate personalised recommendations. Google noted that Personal Intelligence is disabled by default and must be enabled by users.

Ask Maps will also remember previous conversations, allowing users to continue trip planning without repeating earlier questions. For example, travellers can ask the assistant to recall recommendations it previously made for a destination and continue building their itinerary.

Live transit updates arrive

In addition to the new agentic capabilities, Google is introducing a live transit widget that provides real-time updates on delays and transport conditions. Unlike the food ordering and hotel booking tools, both Personal Intelligence and the live transit widget are rolling out across all regions where Ask Maps is currently available.
