Google Wallet Lets Parents Set Up Secure Spending Balances for Kids

Google Wallet is expanding its family-focused features with a new way for parents to give children under 18 access to a controlled spending balance. The feature is designed to help kids learn how to manage money while giving parents tools to monitor and control their spending.

Parents can set daily spending limits, review transaction history, and receive notifications whenever their child makes a purchase. They can also lock or unlock the account if a device is lost or activate a temporary “spending timeout” to pause payments.

Google Wallet adds more parental controls

Children can use Android phones or Wear OS devices to tap and pay anywhere Google Pay is accepted. Google says the feature gives kids a way to manage their own money without requiring them to have a traditional bank account.

The new system brings Google Wallet closer to competing family finance products such as Apple Cash Family, which allows parents to send money to children while monitoring transactions and managing spending controls.

Google is also competing with services such as FamZoo and Greenlight, which focus on helping parents teach financial literacy through prepaid spending accounts and debit cards.

Rolling out in the U.S.

The new Google Wallet feature is rolling out in the United States. Google has not said when, or whether, it will become available in other countries.

The update builds on a feature Google introduced last year that allowed parents and guardians in select countries to let children use digital payments on Android devices under supervision.

Under that system, parents must approve payment cards before they can be added to a child’s Google Wallet, and parents receive an email when their child makes a transaction.

Children can also use Google Wallet for supported digital passes, including event tickets, library cards, and gift cards.

A more controlled way for kids to spend

With the latest update, Google is giving parents greater control over how children use digital payments while allowing kids to practice managing their own money.

The combination of spending limits, transaction alerts, account controls, and temporary spending pauses gives families more oversight without requiring children to have a conventional bank account.
