OpenAI Launches Astra AI Model With Advanced Coding and Computer Use Capabilities

OpenAI has launched Astra, a new artificial intelligence model that the company describes as its most capable system to date, with improvements in computer use, coding, and cybersecurity-related tasks.

The company said Astra represents a new step in AI systems that can interact with computers and browsers, handling tasks with improved speed, accuracy, and safety. OpenAI first made the model available to customers using its cybersecurity program, with access expanding to paid plans including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts, as well as through its API.

In an announcement about the model, OpenAI said Astra brings together years of research focused on building AI systems capable of taking on more complex work while maintaining safety measures.

OpenAI highlights Astra’s coding and cybersecurity abilities

OpenAI has emphasised Astra’s cybersecurity capabilities, saying the model has been tested against security benchmarks and can help identify potential vulnerabilities, including zero-day exploits, so defenders can find and fix weaknesses.

The company also describes Astra as its strongest model for software engineering so far. OpenAI’s evaluations show improvements in tasks such as finding bugs, running terminal operations, and answering questions about codebases compared with other models.

The release has also raised questions around AI monitoring because Astra uses a reasoning approach that can make parts of the model’s internal process harder to observe. OpenAI researchers said monitoring advanced AI systems is becoming more challenging as models become capable of completing harder tasks with fewer visible reasoning steps.

OpenAI discusses Astra and AGI questions

During a discussion with reporters, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said Astra represents a shift in how users can delegate work to AI systems. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said the ability to monitor model behaviour remains an important part of AI oversight.

When asked whether Astra represented the arrival of artificial general intelligence, Brockman said the concept is no longer tied to a contractual milestone between OpenAI and Microsoft. The companies previously had an agreement that referenced AGI as a point affecting their partnership, but that provision has changed. OpenAI and Microsoft later renegotiated parts of their agreement.

OpenAI has not officially defined Astra as AGI, but Brockman said users could decide whether the model meets their own definition of that concept.
