Snap Inc. has announced a new collaboration between its AR-focused subsidiary, Specs, and chipmaker Qualcomm, signalling progress toward the anticipated launch of its wearable smart glasses later this year.

The Snapchat parent has been hinting at the release of its glasses — known as Spectacles, or simply Specs — for quite some time. Earlier this year, the company organised its efforts by spinning off a dedicated unit to focus entirely on the project. In February, Snap also made headlines after parting ways with Scott Myers, its senior vice president of Specs, following a reported disagreement with CEO Evan Spiegel.

The newly revealed agreement with Qualcomm suggests renewed momentum for the initiative. According to a press release, the Specs device will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR platforms, specialised systems-on-a-chip designed for augmented and virtual reality experiences.

As part of the multi-year strategic partnership, the companies plan to jointly develop capabilities including on-device artificial intelligence, advanced graphics performance, and enhanced multiuser digital interactions.

“Our work with Qualcomm provides a strong foundation for the future of Specs, bringing developers and consumers advanced technology and performance that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible,” Spiegel said.

Snap’s journey with smart glasses has been ongoing for more than a decade. The most recent version aimed at general consumers was released in 2019. Since 2024, however, the product has been limited to developers, allowing the company to experiment with new applications and build an ecosystem ahead of a broader public launch.
