Tesla Expands Powerwall 2 Recall to the U.S. After Reports of Fires and Overheating

Tesla is recalling more than 10,000 Powerwall 2 home batteries across the United States after nearly two dozen incidents of the energy storage units overheating, smoking, or catching fire, according to a new alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The U.S. recall follows a similar move in Australia earlier this year, where Tesla issued warnings after several Powerwall 2 units caught fire due to defective battery cells manufactured by an unnamed third-party supplier.

What Triggered the U.S. Recall

According to the CPSC, at least five confirmed fires in the U.S. have been caused by overheating Powerwall 2 units, resulting in minor property damage.
Another six units began smoking, while 11 others overheated without igniting.

The affected batteries were sold between November 2020 and December 2022, the agency said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to questions about which supplier manufactured the defective battery cells involved in the recall.

How to Check If Your Powerwall Is Affected

Owners are advised to:

  1. Ensure their Powerwall is online and connected to the Tesla app.
  2. Check the app to see if their unit is included in the recall.

Tesla will remotely discharge affected units that are online to prevent overheating risks and will replace recalled batteries at no additional charge.

The CPSC recall notice was posted on Thursday, and Electrek was the first to report the news, Safety Concerns Over Home Energy Systems.

The Powerwall 2 recall underscores growing scrutiny over home energy storage systems — a market that has expanded rapidly alongside solar installations and EV charging infrastructure.

While Tesla’s Powerwall remains one of the most popular residential battery systems worldwide, its reliance on third-party battery suppliers has exposed the company to multiple safety investigations in Australia, Germany, and now the U.S.

Analysts say the recall could temporarily slow Tesla’s energy division growth, though the company remains dominant in the segment, with Powerwall installations surpassing 600,000 units globally.
