Nearly three years after launching as Meta’s alternative to Twitter, now known as X, Threads has crossed 500 million monthly active users, marking another major milestone for the rapidly growing social platform. Alongside the announcement, Meta introduced several new features designed to improve personalisation and strengthen community engagement, including a new tool called Your Algo that gives users greater control over the content shown in their feeds.

The new feature builds on the Dear Algo system introduced earlier this year, which allowed users to publicly request more or less of certain content by posting messages such as, “Dear Algo, show me more posts about podcasts.” With Your Algo, users can now make those adjustments privately without publishing a post for everyone to see.

Users can choose to see more or less content related to specific topics and decide how long those preferences remain active—one day, three days, or seven days. These requests remain visible only to the individual user. The feature is rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

By allowing temporary feed customisation, Threads is adding a feature that isn’t currently available on several competing social platforms, giving users more flexibility in their recommendations.

Meta is also expanding its Communities feature by moving it out of beta and introducing several new enhancements. Initially launched last year to encourage topic-focused discussions, Communities gives users dedicated spaces to connect around interests such as sports, books, television, K-pop, and other subjects.

A new Communities Hub will help users discover relevant groups more easily, while updated community icons make individual communities easier to identify across the app.

According to Threads’ head Connor Hayes, one of the biggest challenges since Communities launched has been helping users naturally find conversations that match their interests. The discovery experience is designed to address that issue by putting more communities in front of potential members and helping people connect quickly with like-minded users.

Threads is also expanding Live Chats, allowing more communities to host real-time discussions during major cultural and sporting events. The feature, first introduced in April, will also support co-hosted chats and allow users to quote moments directly to their feeds. Meta expects all communities to gain access to Live Chats by July.

Hayes said many users appreciate Threads because it offers a quieter social experience compared with video-heavy platforms. Live Chats are designed to complement live events by serving as a second-screen experience where users can follow conversations while watching television, sports, or other broadcasts.

The broader rollout of Live Chats is another step toward helping Threads compete more directly with X, which has long dominated real-time discussions around breaking news and live events. Since launch, Threads has steadily added many features that were initially missing, including improved search, hashtags, chronological feeds, direct messaging, desktop messaging, ghost posts, and other user-requested capabilities.

The latest user milestone also reflects the platform’s continued growth. Threads has added approximately 100 million monthly active users over the past 10 months, following a report of 400 million in August 2025. Combined with its expanding feature set, the latest updates demonstrate MMMeta’s continued efforts to position Threads as a stronger competitor in the evolving social media landscape.
