TikTok experiences outages in the US after the second Oracle service disruption since the sale

Some TikTok users across the United States are experiencing issues when using the app, and the company says the issue is due to a problem at an Oracle data centre.

“Creators may temporarily experience lags in posting content while Oracle works to resolve the issue,” TikTok said in a post on X.

Based on reports submitted by users to Downdetector, the disruption appears to have started before 9 a.m. ET. A post from Oracle on X also suggests the outage began around the same time.

Oracle is part of the investor group that owns 80% of the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, the entity created to satisfy a national security law requiring the Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest its U.S. TikTok business or face a ban in the United States.

Even before the creation of the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, Oracle had been supplying cloud infrastructure and managing user data for TikTok. Since the sale, however, Oracle-related issues have contributed to two major TikTok outages.

Only days after the deal was finalised in January, TikTok went through a similar service disruption, which the company said was caused by a winter storm affecting a major Oracle data centre. So far, Oracle has not explained what caused Tuesday’s outage.
