X is down for the second time this week

X, owned by Elon Musk, is experiencing its second widespread outage in a single week.

The platform, formerly known as Twitter, is either failing to load entirely or briefly coming online before displaying error messages. Users on both the website and mobile app reported persistent issues.

Data from Down Detector shows nearly 80,000 reports of X being down, with reports beginning around 10 a.m. Eastern time. The service indicated the outage was ongoing at the time of publication.

This marks the second significant disruption at X this week, following an earlier technical issue. The outage comes amid heightened scrutiny of the platform after Grok, developed by xAI and integrated into X, was criticised for responding to user requests to manipulate real photos of women — and in some cases children — into nonconsensual sexual and violent imagery.

When Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he implemented large-scale layoffs that significantly reduced the company’s workforce, prompting concerns about the platform’s ability to operate reliably and moderate harmful content. While X has largely remained online since then, it experienced several notable outages last year.
