Amazon reportedly plans to cut around 30,000 corporate jobs

Amazon is preparing to conduct one of its largest rounds of layoffs since 2023, with plans to eliminate as many as 30,000 corporate positions starting this week, according to a report by Reuters.

People familiar with the matter said the cuts will begin Tuesday and impact several major divisions, including human resources, devices and services, operations, and other corporate departments.

If confirmed, this would mark Amazon’s most significant job reduction since late 2022, when the company announced plans to cut 27,000 positions as part of a post-pandemic restructuring effort.

AI and Automation Drive Workforce Changes

The new layoffs come amid Amazon’s broader shift toward automation and AI integration across its corporate and operational systems.

A recent CNBC report cited an internal memo from CEO Andy Jassy, in which he acknowledged that the company’s growing use of AI agents and automation technologies will reduce the need for specific white-collar roles over time.

“Fewer corporate jobs will be needed,” Jassy reportedly wrote, highlighting how AI is streamlining workflows in logistics, cloud infrastructure, and internal business operations.

Restructuring After a Series of Smaller Cuts

In recent years, Amazon has implemented smaller, targeted layoffs across multiple divisions. In January 2025, the company reduced the number of positions in its Communications and Sustainability teams.

While Amazon has been investing heavily in AI-powered services through AWS and expanding initiatives like Project Kuiper and Alexa’s AI transformation, the company has also emphasised cost efficiency amid slowing global e-commerce growth.

Amazon has not yet responded to requests for comment on the reported cuts.
