Another fire breaks out at aluminum plant that supplies Ford
A new fire has broken out at the Novelis aluminum plant in Oswego, a key supplier for Ford’s F-150 trucks, raising new concerns after previous shutdowns.
Another fire has erupted at the Novelis aluminium plant in Oswego, New York — the same facility that produces sheet metal for Ford’s trucks, including the all-electric F-150 Lightning.
The four-alarm fire began Thursday morning and remains active. “Everyone who was working at the plant was safely evacuated,” Novelis told TechCrunch. “The fire is under control but crews are on site to make sure it’s fully extinguished.” Local news outlet CNY Central first reported the incident.
The Oswego facility previously suffered a significant fire in September, forcing operations to halt. Ford has stated that the disruption from that incident would likely cost the automaker roughly $2 billion. A second, minor fire followed in October, though the supplier was still preparing to restart production in December. Stellantis and Nissan also reported minor production delays due to the September blaze.
Following the initial shutdown, Ford was forced to scale back production of nearly all F-150 models, which rely heavily on aluminium body panels. The automaker gradually restarted assembly in October but prioritised its gas- and hybrid-powered F-150 models over the F-150 Lightning — a vehicle executives are reportedly considering discontinuing.
It remains unclear how this latest fire will affect Ford’s updated production plans. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Oswego Fire Department also did not return calls seeking more information.
