Apple’s Image Playground Gets a Major Upgrade in Quality and Features
Apple’s Image Playground has improved significantly with better image generation, enhanced creative controls, and a more polished user experience. Discover what has changed and why the AI image tool is now more competitive.
At WWDC 2026 on Monday, Apple announced significant improvements to Image Playground, its AI-powered image generation app built into the iPhone. The update aims to address one of the biggest criticisms of the tool: image quality.
Although Image Playground has been available on Apple devices, it has struggled to match the quality offered by competing AI image-generation platforms. With Apple’s broader AI upgrades, the company says Image Playground will deliver a much-improved experience powered by Apple Intelligence.
“From stunning nature scenes to fun images using multiple people from your Photos library, you can also transform your photos into endless styles just by describing what you want in natural language, and with private cloud compute, your photos are never stored or shared, even with Apple,” said Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto during the WWDC presentation.
As an example, Apple demonstrated how users could create a birthday invitation featuring a friend holding a cake. Using natural language prompts, users can then customise the image further by adding candles, changing clothing, or making other creative adjustments.
Apple is also adding more flexibility to generated images by allowing users to select dimensions that fit their projects, whether creating landscape images for a business website or portrait-oriented visuals for flyers and promotional materials.
Because Image Playground is integrated across Apple devices, generated images can also be used for lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, contact posters, and other personalised content.
Apple additionally emphasised its privacy approach, noting that users’ personal photos are not stored or used for AI training, a practice that has raised concerns around some competing AI platforms.
