Anthropic has introduced Voice Mode for Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant built for developers. The addition of voice functionality represents a notable move toward enabling more natural, hands-free, and conversational coding workflows.

Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar announced the feature's initial rollout on Tuesday in a post on X. According to Shihipar, voice mode is currently available to roughly 5% of users, and the company plans to expand access gradually over the coming weeks.

Voice Mode lets developers interact with Claude Code via spoken commands instead of typing. To activate the feature, users simply type /voice to turn it on. Once enabled, developers can speak instructions directly to the coding assistant, which then processes and executes the request. For example, a user might say, "Refactor the authentication middleware," and Claude Code will carry out the task.

At this stage, details of the new voice feature's full capabilities and limitations remain unclear. It has not yet been confirmed whether there are limits on the number of voice interactions or whether the feature has any technical constraints. It is also unclear whether Anthropic built the voice system internally or partnered with a third-party AI voice provider, such as ElevenLabs, a company with which Anthropic was previously reported to be in discussions.

This is not Anthropic's first experiment with voice interaction. The company introduced Voice Mode for its standard Claude chatbot in May last year, enabling users to communicate with the AI assistant through spoken conversation for a range of everyday tasks.

Competition in the AI coding assistant market has intensified in recent years. Major players such as Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI are all competing to capture developers' attention and usage.

Despite this crowded landscape, Claude Code has quickly become one of the most widely used AI coding tools available. In February, Anthropic reported that Claude Code's run-rate revenue had surpassed $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the beginning of 2026. The company also said weekly active users of the tool have doubled since January.

At the same time, Anthropic's broader Claude ecosystem has experienced significant growth in user interest. The company's mobile app saw a significant increase in downloads after Anthropic declined to allow the U.S. Department of Defence to use its AI systems for domestic surveillance or for fully autonomous weapons. Following that decision, the Claude app rose to the top of the U.S. App Store rankings, overtaking ChatGPT.
