France’s Postal and Banking Services Disrupted by Suspected DDoS Attack

France’s national postal and banking services company La Poste has confirmed that it was knocked offline by a suspected distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Monday. The company described the incident as “a major network incident” that was affecting “all of our information systems.”

As a result of the attack, La Poste’s online mail and banking services, website, and mobile app have been temporarily unavailable. However, customers can still conduct banking and postal transactions in person, according to a machine translation of the announcement.

La Banque Postale, the banking arm of La Poste, also confirmed the cyberattack, stating it was “temporarily making our customers’ access to their mobile app and online banking space unavailable.”

While a Russian hacktivist group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the identities of those behind it remain unclear.

This attack comes as the French government faces a series of recent cybersecurity incidents, including the discovery of remote control software planted on a passenger ferry.

Additionally, last week, the French Interior Ministry reported a data breach in which hackers accessed email accounts and stole confidential documents, including criminal records. Local authorities later arrested a 22-year-old suspect, although their name has not been disclosed.

It remains uncertain whether any of these incidents are related.
