Google Confirms Fix for Gmail Spam and Inbox Sorting Problems
Google says it has resolved an issue that caused Gmail to misclassify emails and incorrectly flag legitimate messages as spam for users worldwide.
https://bsky.app/profile/tomscocca.bsky.social/post/3md6jp6e5ic2nGoogle says issues that caused Gmail to incorrectly flag messages as spam and misclassify emails across inbox tabs have now been fixed, following widespread user complaints on Saturday.
If Gmail didn’t appear to be functioning normally over the weekend, many users experienced the same disruption. According to the official status dashboard for Google Workspace, the problems began around 5 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday. Users reported seeing emails placed in the wrong inbox categories, along with an increase in spam warnings on legitimate messages.
In practice, this meant that messages typically sorted into the Promotions, Social, or Updates tabs were appearing in the Primary inbox. At the same time, emails from known and trusted senders were being flagged as spam. On social media, users complained that “all the spam is going directly to my inbox” and said Gmail’s filtering system appeared to be “suddenly completely busted.”
The Gmail disruption was reflected throughout the day on the Google Workspace status dashboard, where Google posted multiple updates indicating that engineers were still working to resolve the issue. The company later confirmed on Saturday evening that the problem had been fully addressed.
“Some Gmail users experienced a misclassification of emails in their inbox, delays in receiving email,” Google said in a dashboard update. “Additionally, misclassified spam warnings from the incident may persist for existing messages received before the issue resolution.”
Google also said it plans to publish a detailed analysis of the incident once its internal investigation is complete.
This article was first published on January 24, 2026, and has been updated to reflect Google’s confirmation that the Gmail issue has been resolved for all users.
