Long before becoming New York City’s 112th mayor, Zohran Mamdani recognised the growing importance of digital platforms in reaching younger audiences. His political rise was closely linked to online engagement, and now he is expanding that approach with a new initiative to connect directly with residents through livestreaming.

On Thursday, Polygon exclusively reported that Mamdani is launching a recurring Twitch livestream program called “Talk with the People.” The series debuted on May 21 at 4:10 p.m. ET and is designed to allow viewers to ask questions directly via Twitch chat. In addition to Twitch, the broadcast is being streamed simultaneously across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, allowing the mayor to reach audiences across multiple social media platforms at once.

The first livestream drew significant attention, attracting more than 10,000 viewers who tuned in to watch Mamdani respond to questions in real time. The format created an unusually direct interaction between an elected official and an online audience, allowing residents to participate in conversations without the filters often associated with traditional media appearances.

Adding an unexpected element to the debut stream was influencer Moose, who joined the broadcast and helped introduce Mamdani to various aspects of Twitch culture. During the livestream, Moose joked with the mayor and even explained common platform terminology, including the practice of referring to viewers collectively as “chat.”

While some observers may question whether Twitch is the ideal setting for serious political discussions, the platform helped establish a casual and approachable atmosphere. Mamdani engaged with viewers on a variety of lighter topics, including support for the New York Knicks and discussions about favourite taco spots in the city. Restaurants such as Los Tacos No. 1 and Taqueria Ramirez received mentions during the conversation as viewers and the mayor exchanged recommendations.

At the same time, the stream also included discussions about public policy. Mamdani addressed issues such as raising taxes on wealthy residents and outlined plans related to public transportation improvements. Among the initiatives discussed were proposals to provide faster bus service, with a focus on reducing travel times and accelerating routes by approximately 6 times.

The launch offered an early glimpse into what may become a regular part of Mamdani’s communication strategy. It also reflects the broader shift occurring in how political information reaches younger audiences. Increasingly, many people consume news and political commentary through creators, livestreamers, podcasters, and social media personalities rather than relying exclusively on traditional television networks or newspapers.

Twitch itself has undergone a major transformation in recent years. Originally known primarily as a gaming platform, it has evolved into a broader hub for discussions surrounding culture, current events, and politics. Influential creators such as Hasan Piker have demonstrated the platform’s ability to attract large audiences interested in real-time conversations about public affairs and breaking news.

The relationship between politics and Twitch is not entirely new. In 2020, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gained widespread attention by joining popular Among Us livestreams aimed at encouraging voter participation among younger Americans. Those appearances highlighted how digital entertainment platforms could become effective tools for civic engagement.

Speaking to Polygon about the new initiative, Mamdani emphasised the goal of making government more accessible. He described the livestream series as the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official. He said it would provide New Yorkers with a direct opportunity to ask questions and engage with city leadership in real time. He also stressed the importance of reaching younger generations who often feel overlooked by traditional political institutions.

Ahead of the launch, Mamdani teased the project on Instagram with a simple post that read, “5.21.26. 4:10 p.m. Live.” A second image offered a stronger hint about the concept, featuring a reference to Franklin D. Roosevelt and his famous fireside chats. Those radio broadcasts allowed Roosevelt to communicate directly with Americans in their homes during pivotal moments in the country’s history.

The comparison appears intentional. Just as Roosevelt embraced radio as a groundbreaking communication medium of his time, Mamdani appears focused on using today’s dominant digital platforms to reduce the distance between government officials and the public. By meeting residents where they already spend much of their time online, the mayor hopes to create a more direct and accessible form of civic engagement.

The livestream initiative aligns closely with Mamdani’s political identity. Long before becoming mayor, he developed a reputation as one of New York’s most internet-savvy elected officials. During his tenure representing Astoria in the New York State Assembly, he frequently posted informal videos explaining topics such as housing policy, transportation issues, and affordability concerns in clear and straightforward language.

Many of those videos gained significant traction online, particularly among younger voters who may not have engaged with more conventional political messaging. Over time, his digital-first approach helped him build one of the strongest social media presences in urban American politics.

Today, Mamdani’s combined audience across Instagram, TikTok, and X exceeds 15 million followers, giving him a substantial platform through which to communicate directly with constituents and supporters. The launch of “Talk with the People” represents the latest evolution of that strategy as he seeks to blend public service with the communication habits of a new generation of voters.
