Reddit Expands AI Moderation Tools to Reduce Reliance on Karma

Reddit has announced a broad set of platform updates aimed at making it easier for new users to participate in communities while giving moderators more powerful AI-driven tools to manage discussions. The changes are intended to reduce reliance on traditional restrictions such as account age and “karma,” Reddit’s long-standing reputation system that many communities use to screen first-time contributors.

Karma has historically helped Reddit combat spam, bots and abusive accounts by rewarding users whose posts and comments receive upvotes from the community. Over time, however, many subreddits began requiring minimum karma scores or older accounts before allowing people to post, creating barriers for legitimate new users trying to join discussions.

Reddit said it does not plan to eliminate karma, but believes stronger built-in moderation systems can gradually reduce the need for communities to depend on those restrictions.

AI moderation tools expand

Central to the update is Reddit’s AI-powered Rules Hub, a moderation system that uses large language models (LLMs) to determine whether posts or comments violate a community’s rules based on intent rather than simple keyword matching. According to Reddit, the technology is better able to understand context, natural language and edge cases when deciding whether content should be removed or moderated.

The Rules Hub was initially tested in more than 700 communities. Reddit now says all newly created communities can access the feature, with a broader rollout planned later this year for both existing and new subreddits.

Helping moderators and new users

Alongside Rules Hub, Reddit has expanded several moderator tools designed to improve the user experience. One feature helps explain community rules before members publish posts or comments, while another assists users in selecting the appropriate flair, the custom community-specific label displayed alongside usernames.

The company said many newcomers currently encounter invisible obstacles, including unclear post removals, complicated community rules and difficulty discovering relevant communities. The latest changes are designed to make participation easier while giving moderators greater confidence that automated systems can identify abuse without relying solely on karma thresholds.

Infrastructure upgrades continue

Reddit also confirmed plans to modernise its legacy desktop platform by migrating moderator workflows from Old Reddit to its newer infrastructure and transferring critical moderation bots to the updated technology stack.

The announcements follow Reddit’s strong second-quarter financial results, where the company reported revenue of $805 million and earnings per share of $1.25, both ahead of analyst expectations. However, despite the earnings beat, Reddit’s shares declined after Chief Executive Officer Steve Huffman described search referral traffic as “choppy.” Company executives said one of Reddit’s key priorities remains converting more of its roughly 500 million weekly active users into daily users through continued product improvements.
