Bluesky Active Users Decline as Company Expands Beyond Its Social App
Bluesky’s mobile active users are declining, according to Similarweb, as the company expands its focus to AT Protocol apps, AI tools and communities.
Bluesky’s mobile app is losing active users nearly two years after benefiting from a surge of people leaving X, even as the decentralised social network continues adding registered accounts and broadens its strategy beyond its flagship app.
Bluesky had 10.4 million monthly active mobile users worldwide in June 2026, down 27.2% from a year earlier, according to digital intelligence provider Similarweb. Daily active mobile users fell 25.6% year over year in July to about 3 million.
Bluesky active users fell from the post-election peak.
The declines suggest that growth in registered accounts has not translated into sustained mobile activity. Bluesky attracted significant attention following the November 2024 U.S. election, when users dissatisfied with ElonMusk’ss X sought alternative social platforms.
Similarweb estimates indicate Bluesky has now lost more than half of the monthly active users it had around that period. Its quarterly average stood at about 22.1 million monthly active mobile users during the fourth quarter of 2024 before declining to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026, a drop of roughly 52%.
The users who remain, however, continue to engage regularly. Similarweb measured Bluesky’s mobile stickiness rate, the proportion of monthly users who use the app daily, at roughly 29% in June. That was approximately in line with Meta’s Threads.
Bluesky expands its strategy beyond one social app
Under CEO Toni Schneider, Bluesky’s ambitions increasingly extend beyond growing the Bluesky app itself. The company is also developing AT Protocol, the decentralised technology underlying Bluesky, as infrastructure that other social apps, services and communities can use.
Projects including BlackSky and Eurosky are being built around the protocol, while video-focused AT Protocol app Skylight has also gained early traction.
Bluesky has expanded into other products as well, including Attie, an AI-powered research tool. The company is also developing support for private data, potentially extending the network beyond public conversations into private communities and networking.
Bluesky’s public statistics show nearly 46 million registered users, although the company does not disclose specific daily or monthly active-user numbers.
X also sees mobile usage decline
Similarweb’s estimates do not necessarily indicate that departing Bluesky users are returning to X. X’s worldwide monthly active mobile users declined about 3% year over year in June, while daily active mobile users fell 7% in July to 123.7 million.
X nevertheless remains substantially larger, with approximately 302 million monthly active mobile users in June. Its web traffic also increased 5.3% year over year in July to 4.7 billion visits, according to Similarweb.
Threads continues to gain active users
Meta-owned Threads is moving in the opposite direction. Similarweb estimated that Threads reached 147 million daily active mobile users in July, an increase of 21.3% from a year earlier.
Visits to the Threads website also increased 112% year over year to 471.6 million. The data does not establish whether Threads is directly benefiting fromBluesky’ss declining engagement or attracting users who were not previously active on Twitter-style social networks.
For Bluesky, the falling mobile numbers highlight the challenge of maintaining the momentum generated by its rapid post-election growth. Its broader strategy, however, increasingly depends on whether AT Protocol can support an ecosystem of independent social products rather than measuring success solely through usage of the Bluesky app.
