Discord Rolls Out Age Verification Measures for Users Worldwide

Discord has started rolling out new age-verification measures across its platform as the company introduces separate experiences for teen and adult users. The move follows months of debate over privacy, biometric checks, and the growing use of online age-assurance technology.

The company previously delayed its plans after users raised concerns about sharing identification documents and biometric information. Privacy advocates, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have warned about potential privacy and security risks linked to age-verification systems.

How Discord Estimates User Age

Discord says more than 90% of users will not need to complete an age check. Instead, the platform will use existing account signals, including account age, device information, activity patterns, and usage behaviour, to estimate whether an account belongs to an adult, teen, or unconfirmed age group.

The company says it does not estimate age using message content, profile information, or demographic details. Discord explained that its machine learning model identifies patterns in how different age groups typically use the platform. The company detailed its age estimation approach in a technical explanation.

Changes for Teen Accounts

Users whom Discord cannot confidently classify as adults can verify their age through alternative methods, including credit card verification or age information linked to Apple App Store or Google Play Store accounts.

Confirmed adult accounts will not see changes to their experience. Teen accounts will have restrictions on age-restricted servers and channels, while additional protections will apply to message requests and friend connections.

Privacy Debate Around Age Checks

Discord said it developed its age-assurance system as governments in different regions introduced requirements for online platforms to protect younger users. The company has already deployed similar measures in areas including Brazil and Texas.

The rollout reflects a broader challenge for online platforms as they balance regulatory requirements with user privacy concerns. Discord said its goal is to create safer experiences for teens while maintaining the existing platform experience for adults.
