TikTok U.S. Joins Lantern Child Safety Initiative to Combat Online Harm

TikTok’s U.S. business, known as TikTok USDS Joint Venture, has joined Lantern, a cross-platform child safety initiative designed to help technology companies work together against online child exploitation and abuse.

Launched by the Tech Coalition in 2023, Lantern allows participating companies to share signals related to harmful behavior and content securely. The goal is to help platforms identify bad actors who may move between different services.

TikTok Joins Major Technology Safety Network

Lantern already includes companies such as Google, X, Snap, Twitch, Anthropic, Meta, Discord, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox, and Reddit. The program says participating companies have shared more than 2 million signals of potentially violating behaviour through 2025.

TikTok’s decision to join the initiative comes after it separated its U.S. operations from the broader TikTok platform. The company’s U.S. unit was already required to report suspected child sexual abuse material and other child safety threats to the National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline.

Investment in CyberTipline Modernisation

TikTok USDS Joint Venture has also committed $2 million to support NCMEC’s efforts to modernise the CyberTipline.

The modernisation project is expected to take three years and cost $10 million. TikTok said the investment will help NCMEC use advanced search, automation, and analysis tools to improve detection, reduce manual processing time, and speed up reports sent to law enforcement when children may be at risk.

Other technology companies, including AWS, Microsoft, and Palantir, are also contributing resources to the project.

TikTok’s participation in Lantern adds another major platform to an industry-wide effort to improve cooperation between online services in addressing child safety risks.
