Meta Introduces Camera-Free AI Glasses

Meta has introduced its first camera-free AI glasses, Ray-Ban Meta Audio, designed to offer smart-glasses features without the privacy concerns tied to built-in cameras.

The new glasses focus on audio-based experiences, including listening to music and podcasts, making calls, translating speech, and interacting with Meta’s AI assistant, Muse. Meta’s camera-free glasses announcement comes as privacy concerns around AI wearables continue to grow.

Camera-Free Design Targets Privacy Concerns

Meta’s existing AI glasses include cameras, which have faced criticism after some users used them to record people without consent. Concerns around covert recording have become a major discussion point for AI-enabled eyewear.

By removing cameras, Meta says the new glasses can focus on audio features while avoiding some of the concerns linked to image capture. Previous reports highlighted public concerns about how camera-equipped smart glasses could be misused.

Other privacy-focused wearable concepts have also explored ways to reduce concerns around camera-based smart devices.

Smaller Design and Longer Battery Life

Because the glasses do not require camera hardware, Meta says Ray-Ban Meta Audio is slimmer than its other models and weighs 43 grams. The device includes adjustable temple tips, interchangeable nose pads, and overextension hinges.

Meta claims the glasses can provide up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. With the charging case, total battery life can reach up to 48 hours.

Meta Expands AI Wearables Lineup

The Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses were designed with EssilorLuxottica and will start at $349. They will be available for preorder on Oct. 13, with multiple colour and lens combinations, including prescription options.

Alongside the audio-only glasses, Meta also announced Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, which keeps camera-based features. The new generation includes a 12-megapixel camera, 3K Ultra HD video support, a six-microphone array, and up to nine hours of battery life.

Meta Continues Building AI Glasses Platform

Meta said all of its AI glasses will include access to its Muse AI assistant. The company also announced future features including improved audio modes, hearing enhancements, customizable controls, and private processing options designed to limit company access to user data.

The launch expands Meta’s wearable technology strategy while separating camera-free audio experiences from camera-based AI glasses that continue to face privacy debates.
