Twitch Makes Amazon AI Training the Default, Adds Opt-Out

Twitch is giving streamers a way to prevent their channel content from being used to train Amazon’s generative AI models. Still, creators are included by default unless they manually turn off the new setting.

The change has drawn criticism from parts of the Twitch community, where livestreamers can produce hours of video, voice recordings and other material each week. Because participation does not require creators to opt in actively, some users have raised concerns that their content could be used for AI training without their knowledge of the new setting.

Twitch makes Amazon AI training opt-out by default

Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton addressed the decision during a livestream with Head of Community Mary Kish, as viewers questioned why the company had chosen an opt-out system rather than asking creators for permission first.

“If this were opt-in, nobody would opt in,” Minton said, describing that as the straightforward reason for the approach.

The company has presented the change as a new privacy control that allows users to block their channel content from being used to train generative AI models across Amazon. That framing also prompted questions about whether Twitch content had already been used for AI training before the setting became available.

Asked during the livestream whether that had happened, Minton said he did not know what Amazon had previously used for model training. Twitch has therefore provided creators with control over future participation without publicly resolving every question about past use.

Creators can turn off the setting in account controls

Streamers who do not want their channel content used for Amazon’s generative AI training can change the setting from their Twitch account controls. Users need to open the channel settings, select the Security and Privacy section, find the option labelled “Training for Generative AI,” and switch it off.

Twitch’s official support documentation says turning off the setting prevents channel content from being used to train generative AI content models at Amazon. The company also notes that the choice does not disable every AI or machine-learning feature used elsewhere on Twitch.

AI training raises questions for creator platforms

The dispute reflects a broader tension between technology companies developing generative AI systems and creators whose work can provide valuable training material. Streamers are particularly exposed to the issue because their channels can contain extensive recordings of their voices, appearances, gameplay and commentary.

Kish said Twitch’s decision to provide an opt-out reflects feedback from community members who do not want their content used to train generative AI models.

The policy gives creators a way to refuse that use, but the decision to enable participation by default leaves the responsibility on individual streamers to find and change the setting. For Twitch, that distinction has become the central issue in the community response to Amazon’s use of creator content for AI development.
