Ram Ends EV Pickup Truck Plans
Stellantis has scrapped plans for the all-electric Ram 1500 pickup, shifting focus to the extended-range Ram 1500 REV with up to 690 miles of range, set for 2026.
The all-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup is no more. In its place, Ram is moving ahead with the extended-range version — once known as the Ramcharger, now officially renamed the Ram 1500 REV.
Stellantis, Ram’s parent company, announced Friday that it will halt development of a fully battery-electric full-size pickup. The automaker pointed to declining demand for large BEV trucks in North America as the key reason, according to a statement shared with TechCrunch and published on its website.
“As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup,” the company said. “As part of this, Ram is renaming its REEV-powered pickup to Ram 1500 REV (formerly Ramcharger). This vehicle will set a new benchmark in the half-ton segment, offering exceptional range, towing capability and payload performance.”
The name change might be confusing, but here’s the key takeaway: Stellantis is scrapping its all-electric pickup in favor of a range-extended model that blends a battery with a gas generator. This design promises up to 690 miles of range, along with towing and payload strength that Ram believes will outclass rivals.
The now-canceled Ram 1500 BEV had been part of Stellantis’ U.S. electric strategy to roll out 25+ new BEVs by 2030. However, doubts around its future had been building for months.
After a high-profile debut at CES 2023 and subsequent showcases, Stellantis repeatedly shifted timelines. The company initially targeted a 2024 production start, later moving it to 2025. By late 2024, plans for the electric truck — featuring a longer cabin with third-row jump seats, advanced tech, and two large battery pack options — were delayed once more, this time to 2026.
Now, the all-electric version is off the table entirely. A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed that production of the extended-range Ram 1500 REV remains on track, with launch expected in 2026.
