Sam Altman’s World Raises $52.5 Million Through Crypto Token Sale
World, the online identity verification startup co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has raised $52.5 million through a strategic sale of its WLD cryptocurrency token to a group of long-term investors.
The funding was completed through a 12-month lockup token sale, meaning participating investors will be unable to sell or trade their WLD holdings for a year. According to the company, the lockup reflects investors’ long-term commitment to the continued growth and utility of the World ecosystem.
The proceeds from the sale will be directed to the World Foundation, a Cayman Islands-based exempted limited guarantee foundation responsible for overseeing the expansion of World’s global network and ecosystem.
Pantera Capital, a venture capital firm specialising in digital assets, led the investment round. Other participants included Eightco Holdings, Bain Capital Crypto, Susquehanna Crypto, Selini Capital and several additional strategic investors.
World continues to expand its digital identity platform
San Francisco-based startup Tools operates the World project for Humanity (TFH), which Sam Altman and CEO Alex Blania co-founded. The company focuses on building identity verification tools designed to distinguish real people from bots and AI-generated accounts as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of creating online content.
At the centre of the platform is World ID, an anonymous digital credential that confirms a user is human without revealing their personal identity. To receive the highest level of verification, users must scan their eyes using a metallic device known as an Orb. The Orb converts a person’s iris into a unique cryptographic identifier, allowing the system to verify uniqueness without storing the actual biometric image. World has deployed Orbs at its own locations as well as through retail partners in multiple countries.
From Worldcoin to World
The initiative originally launched under the name Worldcoin, which also remains the name of the cryptocurrency involved in the latest fundraising. Through the World app, users can store, manage and trade WLD tokens while also accessing their World ID through an integrated custodial wallet.
The company later rebranded the broader project as World amid wider criticism of the cryptocurrency industry while expanding its focus beyond digital assets toward online identity verification.
Growth plans and ongoing challenges
World has continued adding new products and partnerships despite facing challenges in achieving widespread adoption. In April, the company introduced a redesigned version of its mobile application. It announced partnerships with companies including Tinder, Zoom and DocuSign, aiming to integrate World ID into popular consumer services.
Despite those efforts and its broader ambition to create a global proof-of-human network, the company has struggled to convince large numbers of consumers to adopt its identity verification platform. Tools for Humanity also carried out layoffs in June as it continued refining its business strategy.
The latest funding provides additional capital to support World’s expansion while reinforcing investor confidence in its long-term vision of building infrastructure that helps distinguish humans from bots in an increasingly AI-driven internet.
