Sierra, led by Bret Taylor, acquires YC-backed AI startup Fragment

Sierra, the customer service agent startup co-founded by Bret Taylor, revealed on Thursday that it has acquired the YC–backed French AI startup Fragment, which focuses on helping businesses embed artificial intelligence into their workflows.

This marks Sierra’s third publicly disclosed acquisition to date. Earlier, the company completed purchases of Japan-based enterprise AI solutions provider Opera Tech in late March, along with voice agent startup Receptive AI, which was also announced around the same time. Following the latest deal, Fragment’s co-founders, Olivier Moindrot and Guillaume Genthial, are set to join Sierra’s team.

In a blog post, Taylor and his co-founder Clay Bavor highlighted that Moindrot and Genthial are expected to add “valuable strength” to Sierra’s agent development initiatives in France. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. According to PitchBook estimates, Fragment raised approximately $2 million in its seed funding round.

Taylor, who also serves as chairman of the board at OpenAI, co-founded Sierra with Bavor, a former Google executive, after stepping down as co-CEO of Salesforce in early 2023. Sierra reports that companies such as Casper, Clear, and Brex are among its customers. The startup has secured more than $630 million in total funding so far, with backing from investors including Sequoia Capital and Benchmark, and has reached a $10 billion valuation.
