Threads already has more than 400 million monthly users, but Meta is clearly aiming to push that number even higher. With the rollout of a new Threads feature this week, the company is making it simpler for users to share posts from Threads to their Instagram Stories — a change that could help Meta leverage Instagram’s much larger audience to drive additional traffic and growth to its X competitor.

Meta announced on Thursday that Threads now includes a feature that lets users share a Threads post to an Instagram Story without leaving the Threads app. Instead of switching between apps, users can now preview how a Threads post will appear in their Story directly within Threads before publishing.

Previously, Threads already allowed users to share someone else’s Threads post to an Instagram Story in a way similar to resharing an Instagram post to a Story. The app already offers options for sharing Threads posts to an Instagram Feed or via direct messages.

Meta’s text-first, Twitter-like app Threads launched in July 2023 and benefited early from its close integration with Instagram, helping it grow quickly out of the gate. When Threads launched, users had to sign up using their Instagram credentials, which allowed the app to automatically import key profile details like usernames, bios, and photos, along with verification status and existing follower connections.

With a single tap, users could immediately follow the same accounts they already followed on Instagram — and people who hadn’t joined Threads could even receive notifications that someone had added them.

Since launch, Meta has continued using its larger social platforms to boost Threads’ growth, including by surfacing popular Threads posts on Facebook and by adding a carousel of Threads posts that appears to Instagram users. Meta has also made cross-posting from Instagram and Facebook to Threads easy, further increasing adoption.

Those efforts appear to be working. Data from market intelligence firm Similarweb last month showed that Threads now sees more daily mobile usage than Elon Musk’s X, though X still leads on web usage. Threads’ overall user growth has also continued to climb, doubling from 200 million monthly active users in August 2024 to 400 million monthly users by August 2025. Meta also said in October that Threads reached 150 million daily active users.
