TikTok is laying off 250 employees and closing its Nashville office, which housed part of the company’s content-moderation operation.

Zanna Crowley, a spokesperson for the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, confirmed the layoffs and said the move is intended to “streamline our operations and better align our teams for long-term growth.” The company said it remains committed to providing a safe experience for its 200 million U.S. users.

The Nashville office, which TikTok leased in 2024, is scheduled to close on October 5.

The cuts come as TikTok and other social media companies increasingly use artificial intelligence to detect and remove violent, explicit and otherwise harmful content. The shift toward automated moderation has raised questions about the future role of human moderators, even as platforms continue to rely on people for more complex enforcement decisions.

TikTok’s latest layoffs also come as the company continues to adjust its U.S. operations around the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, which was established to address concerns over the platform’s ownership, data security and operations in the United States.

The company did not provide further details about which roles would be eliminated or whether additional offices would be affected.

The Nashville closure represents another change for TikTok’s U.S. workforce as the company focuses on restructuring teams and increasing operational efficiency.
