WhatsApp gets its own Instagram Notes-like feature
WhatsApp is rolling out its own version of a status update feature, similar to Instagram Notes.
Like on Instagram, the new feature lets users post short text updates that others can see. This space can be used to share what you’re doing, what’s new in your life, or even something meant to spark a conversation. Users can also explain why they might not be available to chat at the moment.
Interestingly, WhatsApp notes in a blog post that this “About” feature was actually the platform’s first. Before WhatsApp became known for secure messaging, it allowed people to share short updates like these.

With the relaunch, WhatsApp is making the “About” status more prominent. It will now appear at the top of one-on-one chats and on user profiles. People can tap on someone’s About status directly in a chat to reply to it.
Like Instagram Notes, WhatsApp’s About status disappears by default after 24 hours. However, users can adjust the timer so it expires sooner or stays visible longer than a day. Users can also control who sees their About status — whether only contacts or a broader audience.
At launch, the feature is not as fully featured as Instagram Notes, which supports short looping videos and integrations that let you share what music you’re listening to. But if WhatsApp users embrace the feature, similar additions could follow.
WhatsApp says the update is rolling out to mobile users starting this week.
