In an unexpected announcement on Monday, Apple introduced the AirPods Max 2, the successor to its high-end over-ear headphones originally released in 2020.

Priced at $549, the AirPods Max 2 come equipped with active noise cancellation, Apple’s new audio-focused H2 chip, support for live translation, improved sound performance, and additional enhancements. The headphones will be available for preorder starting March 25 in colours including midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, with general availability expected early next month.

Apple states that the updated active noise cancellation (ANC) is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation. The new Adaptive Audio feature automatically adjusts ANC and Transparency levels based on the surrounding environment, aiming to provide a more seamless listening experience.

Transparency mode has also been refined. According to Apple, it now delivers a more natural sound thanks to a new digital signal processing algorithm optimised for the H2 chip and the AirPods Max microphone system, allowing users to stay aware of their surroundings and nearby conversations.

A key addition is Live Translation, which enables real-time communication across different languages during in-person interactions. The headphones also include voice isolation, using advanced computational audio techniques to enhance the user’s voice during calls while minimising background noise.

Apple says the AirPods Max 2 feature a new high-dynamic-range amplifier, designed to deliver cleaner audio output. SpatialAudio has also been improved, offering better instrument separation, enhanced bass response, and more balanced mids and highs.

The headphones introduce Camera Remote functionality, allowing users to control the camera on an iPhone or iPad remotely. By pressing the Digital Crown, users can capture photos or start and stop video recording in the Camera app or in supported third-party apps.

In addition, Apple has included a Loud Sound Reduction feature, intended to protect users from excessive environmental noise while maintaining audio clarity.

The upgraded microphone system is designed to benefit creators such as interviewers, podcasters, and musicians by capturing clearer, more natural-sounding audio. The AirPods Max 2 also support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback when connected using the included USB-C cable.

Apple confirmed that the AirPods Max 2 will be released in more than 30 countries and regions.
