GM to end Chevy Bolt EV production next year, move China-made Buick to US factory
General Motors plans to end production of the Chevy Bolt EV next year as it shifts Buick and Chevrolet manufacturing from China and Mexico to a US plant in Kansas.
General Motors is reshuffling its global manufacturing footprint, shifting vehicle production away from China and Mexico and into the United States. As part of that transition, the automaker plans to wind down production of the rebooted Chevrolet Bolt EV, which is currently the only model assembled at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas.
The production changes reflect a shifting economic and political backdrop shaped by the Trump administration’s tariff policies and the decision to end the federal EV tax credit, which previously offered up to $7,500 off qualifying electric vehicles. Together, those policy moves have made it more costly for automakers to build cars in China and Mexico for sale in the U.S. market.
Production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV — which reached dealerships earlier this month — is expected to conclude in roughly 18 months. Priced at $29,990 including destination fees, the updated Bolt remains one of the most affordable new electric vehicles available to American buyers.
GM confirmed to TechCrunch that the next-generation Buick Envision, which is currently manufactured in China, will move to the Fairfax Assembly Plant beginning in 2028. In addition, production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, now built at GM’s San Luis Potosí facility in Mexico, will shift to the Kansas plant in mid-2027.
That timeline leaves the Bolt with a relatively short production window, consistent with what GM previously signalled when it reintroduced the vehicle.
“When we revealed Bolt in October, we said — and it was widely reported — that it’d be a limited-run model,” a GM spokesperson said in a statement provided to TechCrunch. “We had also previously announced the gas-powered Equinox would be coming to Fairfax in mid-2027 after Bolt production ramps down. Today we’re announcing the next-generation Buick compact SUV will come to Fairfax beginning in 2028.”
GM continues to offer other electric models, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV and Chevrolet Blazer EV. Whether the company ultimately revisits its decision on the Bolt may depend on how well the model performs during its short run.
What is clear is that GM has committed to future investment at the Fairfax Assembly Plant. The company has said the facility will play a role in producing its next generation of more affordable electric vehicles. However, it has not yet provided a timeline for when those models will arrive.
