TV Time to Shut Down as Parent Company Shifts Focus to AI Technologies
TV Time, the popular TV and movie tracking app, will shut down on July 15, 2026, as its parent company, Whip Media, shifts its business strategy toward AI-powered enterprise solutions.
Time, a well-known app that lets users track the television shows and movies they watch while participating in fan discussions, is officially shutting down. The company informed users through in-app notifications that the service will be discontinued, with the app ceasing operations after July 15, 2026.
According to the announcement, the cost of maintaining the platform played a role in the decision. However, the company’s broader transition toward an AI-focused business strategy appears to be the more significant reason behind the shutdown.
“While we loved supporting TV Time, it was no longer sustainable to continue operating the service as a free app, and there was not enough demand for a paid app,” the company said in its message. “To everyone who tracked, discovered, and shared their love of TV and movies with us, thank you. Your passion and enthusiasm made TV Time more than an app. You made it a community.”
The closure marks the end of one of the internet’s largest television fan communities. It highlights how the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is changing business priorities across the technology industry. As companies increasingly invest in AI products and services, consumer-focused applications are sometimes being discontinued despite maintaining active user communities. A recent example is Mozilla’s decision to shut down its read-it-later service Pocket, even though it retained a loyal user base, as the company shifted resources toward Firefox and AI-powered browsing experiences.
TV Time, owned by Whip Media, has accumulated more than 26.4 million lifetime downloads, according to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures. Over the past 30 days alone, the app recorded nearly 29,000 new downloads. Whip Media has frequently highlighted TV Time’s community of more than 25 million users in its marketing materials. Beyond serving consumers, TV Time also supplied valuable viewing and engagement data that supported Whip Media’s business intelligence products for the entertainment industry. As a result, the app itself did not necessarily need to generate direct profits because the user data it produced held significant commercial value.
The company’s direction changed following Whip Media’s acquisition by direct lender Blue Torch Capital in early 2025. Under its new ownership, the business began to focus more on artificial intelligence and automation.
Rather than continuing to emphasise services such as audience sentiment analysis, ratings forecasting, content optimisation, and other insights informed by TV Time’s user data, Whip Media has shifted its attention toward products with greater commercial potential. Its current priorities include Helix, an AI-powered automation and workflow management platform designed to improve streaming analytics and media supply chain operations.
One unanswered question is why the company chose to discontinue TV Time rather than sell the still-popular application. One possible explanation is that Whip Media may not have wanted another business to acquire the platform and benefit from the valuable user data it generated, potentially creating a stronger competitor within the media and entertainment sector. Appfigures’ data also showed that the app experienced slower download growth during the first half of this year.
Whip Media has stated that data collected through TV Time will not be used for any commercial purposes after the platform shuts down. The company also confirmed that all users’ personal information will be permanently deleted.
The company said TV Time will be removed from app stores on July 15. Before that date, users who wish to keep their information can request a copy of their data using a GDPR-compliant export tool.
