YouTube Music tests AI hosts that share trivia and commentary
YouTube Music is testing AI hosts that share trivia, stories, and commentary about songs, expanding its AI experiments with YouTube Labs.
YouTube Music has started testing AI-powered music hosts that provide stories, fan trivia, and commentary related to the tracks listeners are playing, the company announced on Friday.
The move follows Spotify’s introduction of its AI DJ two years ago, which curates playlists alongside spoken AI-driven insights about artists and songs.
This new feature builds on YouTube Music’s broader experiments with conversational AI. In July, the platform launched an AI conversational radio tool, allowing users to create personalised radio stations by simply describing the type of music they want.
The AI hosts are currently being tested through YouTube Labs, the service’s new hub for AI experiments. In a blog post, YouTube described Labs as “a new initiative dedicated to exploring the potential of AI on YouTube.” The concept mirrors Google Labs, which offers early access to experimental AI tools across Google products.
YouTube Labs is available to all users — no Premium subscription required — but access to this AI-hosted test is limited to a small group of U.S.-based participants.
The company has been rolling out multiple AI features across YouTube over the past few months. Earlier this month, YouTube released GenAI tools for Shorts creation, while also expanding its AI-powered search results carousel, similar to Google’s AI Overviews. The platform also extended access to its conversational AI assistant, which helps users find content, receive video summaries, and get recommendations.
At the same time, YouTube is tightening rules around AI-generated material. In its latest policy update, the company announced new measures to prevent creators from monetising “inauthentic” or mass-produced AI content, signalling a push to balance innovation with quality control.
