Amazon Chief Reportedly Flagged Anthropic AI Risks Before US Restrictions
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reportedly raised concerns about Anthropic’s advanced AI models before US authorities imposed restrictions, citing potential cybersecurity and national security risks.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reportedly helped raise security concerns that contributed to the U.S. government’s decision to restrict access to two of Anthropic’s most advanced AI models.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Jassy told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other officials that Amazon researchers had used Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model to obtain information that could potentially be used in cyberattacks. Shortly afterwards, the government imposed export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5.
An Amazon spokesperson said governments regularly seek the company’s views on security risks but declined to comment on any specific discussions. The company also noted that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been affected by the model restrictions.
Reuters and The Information also reported that Amazon, one of Anthropic’s largest investors, had communicated concerns about the models’ security capabilities.
David Sacks, the Trump administration’s former AI czar, said a trusted partner of both Anthropic and the U.S. government identified a jailbreak affecting the model. According to Sacks, officials asked Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to fix the issue or withdraw the model, but the company declined.
Anthropic has disputed the concerns, arguing that the capabilities cited by regulators are already available in other publicly accessible AI systems and that the reported exploit was limited in scope.
